Windsor Hotel & Apartments History
The hotel was built in 1896 by Benjamin Rainsford who was commissioned by Dr Joshua Hoffman and was originally built as a sanatorium for patient requiring heath recuperating holidays. Even in these early days the air quality and health giving benefits of this air was recognised by the medical fraternity. Dr Hoffman was married to Maree Smuts (one of General Jan Smuts’ sisters – former South African president). General Smuts himself often stayed at The Windsor Hotel.
In 1931 David Allengensky bought The Sanatorium and on his return from England aboard the Union Castle Ship, Windsor Castle, where he was so impressed with the service he received, that he changed the name to The Hotel Windsor.
1940 Alex Luyt bought the Hotel Windsor and for 20 years The Windsor was the choice stay of rock anglers from across the world. Alex Luyt himself represented South Africa in a few angling competitions. The variety of fish found off the Hermanus coast line was a huge attraction in those days. The Windsor remains committed to protecting that Heritage.
In 1981 after a few bad years The Windsor Hotel was bought by Basil Clark-Brown. His strong determination and will as well as his ever supporting and committed wife, Mrs Eve Clark-Brown set about restoring the Windsor to its former glory. Additional buildings were added including the West Wing and in 1996 the hotel was purchased by their eldest son, Garth Clark-Brown.
To this day Garth has held true the original core values of The Windsor Hotel which are to be a relaxing stay at affordable prices for the average man in the street who can enjoy the wonders of Hermanus whenever they wish.
The Windsor hotel has stood for a 116 years, she has never closed once her doors to the weary traveller and the original core of the building has never been altered. She is the oldest and largest hotel in Hermanus and she looks forward to welcoming you to be part of her history.
