Wilderness is a place that must be visited by any tourist to the Garden Route; it truly is a place of timeless beauty. There are many things to see and do in this small village. The Map of Africa viewpoint offers fantastic views of the Kaaimans River Valley.
Another great viewpoint is Dolphin Point which gives a magnificent view of the Wilderness coastline and ocean. It was named after the number of dolphins which can be spotted from here on a regular basis, as well as whales during the winter months in their breeding season.
Sadly, the Outeniqua Choo-Tjoe steam train does not operate any more. An interesting and fun alternative is the Outeniqua Power Van. It leaves from the Outeniqua Railway Museum and winds its way through the mountains. Take in the views whilst listening to the commentary of an experienced tour guide. The scenic routes include forests, four passes, waterfalls, seven tunnels, fynbos and bird & animal life. The panoramic trip takes 2½ hours, including a 30 minute picnic stop.
