Paternoster is an old fishing village situated along the Western Cape coast just outside of Vredenburg and a little way outside of the renowned city of Cape Town.
Paternoster is a small village and picturesque with an old charm feel about it. The name is Latin and translates to ‘Our Father’ a remnant of the Portuguese colonisers. The West Coast Fossil Park is situated just outside Paternoster in the small neighbouring town of Langebaan. The museum houses fossils of many extinct and exotic animals including sabre-tooth cats, short necked giraffes and even ancient bears. All animals found have existed 5.2 million years ago during Miocene and early Pliocene era. The fossils were uncovered when mining was done in the surrounding area and have been carefully preserved and studied. The sheer amount of fossils that have been found in this site make it one of the most famous Mio-Pliocene sites in the world and a vast amount of renowned scientists have studied and visited the site. The fascinating fossils are on display and educational tours are conducted by trained guides who are very knowledgeable about the various displays guests will see. Cape Columbine Nature Reserve
The Cape Columbine Nature Reserve stretches along a section of the Western Cape coastline and is made up of pristine forest land with beach sand as well as coves. The reserve opened in 1973 and is located a mere 5km away from Paternoster. The reserve has been conserved and is a wonderful seaside park, perfect for the whole family to enjoy. The reserve name was taken from the famous Columbine Lighthouse that stands proudly along the coast of the reserve. The Columbine Lighthouse was the last manual controlled lighthouse to be built along the South African coast. The reserve is also known to bloom fascinating and beautiful flowers from July to October. The flowers provide splatter of colour that contrast beautifully with the golden white beach sand and the blue ocean that stretches for miles ahead. Tietiesbay is found within the reserve’s boundaries and the town has some of the most unspoilt and pristine beaches in South Africa.
