The Garden Route is a popular stretch of the south-eastern coast of South Africa. It stretches from Heidelberg in the Western Cape to the Storms River, which is crossed along the N2 coastal highway over the Paul Sauer Bridge in the extreme western reach of the neighbouring Eastern Cape.
The name comes from the verdant and ecologically diverse vegetation encountered here, and the numerous lagoons and lakes dotted along the coast. Along the Garden Route are such It includes towns such as Mossel Bay, Knysna, Oudtshoorn, Plettenberg Bay and Nature’s Valley,; with George, the Garden Route’’s largest city and main administrative centre.
It This area has an oceanic climate, with mild to warm summers, and mild to cool winters. It has the mildest climate in South Africa. Temperatures rarely fall below 10°C in winter and rarely climb beyond 28°C in summer. Rain occurs year -round, with a slight peak in the spring months, brought by the humid sea- winds from the Indian Ocean rising and releasing their precipitation along the Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma Mountains just inland of the coast.
The Garden Route is sandwiched between the aforementioned mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Outeniqua and Tsitsikamma indigenous forests are a unique mixture of Cape Fynbos and Temperate Forest, and offer hiking trails and eco-tourism activities. Nearly 300 species of bird life are to be found in a variety of habitats ranging from fynbos to forest to wetlands.
Ten nature reserves embrace the varied ecosystems of the area, along withas well as unique marine reserves that are, home to soft coral reefs, dolphins, seals and a host of other marine life. Various bays along the Garden Route are nurseries to the endangered Southern Right Whale, which come there to calve in the winter and spring (July to December).

As you enter the farming area just outside George on the Geelhoutboom road, you will be in awe of the rows and rows of strawberries in what is now known as “Strawberry Country”. Redberry Farm is the first beacon that greets tourists along the beautiful Outeniqua Country Hop Route where visitors are lured in by the sweet aroma of ripe berries.
Once you have chosen which container to use, you will be guided to the “pick your own fields,” taking a carefree walk through the farm with the majestic Outeniqua mountains in the background. Friendly staff are always keen to answer your questions and share the inner secrets of the strawberry.
Redberry Farm also offers a tea garden and farm stall where home-made produce can be purchased. A children’s playground makes this a popular attraction for families with small children.
Open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00am to 4:00pm (open on public holidays, except Christmas Day and Good Friday). The farm is closed on Sundays as all farmers need some family time and rest.
Knysna Elephant Park
Get to touch, feel, feed, walk trunk-in hand and even ride these magnificent animals. Elephants are highly intelligent and delightful – when meeting them, you will discover that each one has a different character, personality and temperament. Join the southern-most clan of elephants in the world at the Knysna Elephant Park, where the resident family of African elephants and world-class guides will unravel the sad and mystical story of the Knysna Elephants. The park offers a rare and exciting opportunity to get close to these gentle giants, who live in a controlled, free-range environment in the heart of the famous Garden Route.
Bungee Jumping
Bungee jumping is normally a highlight on a Garden Route visit. The location is very close to various other activities and you will enjoy a very scenic drive from Mossel Bay to this location, passing through such beautiful towns as Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.
On the bridge, there is a lot to do, even for the non-bungee jumper, including a bridge walk to the spot where the jumpers take off for a small fee. There is also a restaurant at the lookout point where friends and family members may eat while watching the jumps. This is also a great spot for taking photos and video, so do not forget your zoom lens!
Breathtaking views from this location make it a worthwhile visit for the whole group or family.
Shark Cage Diving
Dive with Great White Sharks in Mossel Bay around Seal Island.
The island is populated by over 2,500 Cape Fur Seals and is a primary hunting spot for a very respected predator of the ocean, the Great White Shark.
With prime sightings, you will have the experience of a lifetime viewing these magnificent animals from within their own world.
This is a very safe activity and no training is necessary. It is guaranteed to be the of a lifetime. If you are lucky, you might even see a shark breach the water’s surface. These majestic animals average 2.5 to 7 metres long and make for a spectacular sight.
Viewing the action from atop a boat is also a great treat for those who have never seen a shark from above.
Treetop Tours
The Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour is a unique eco-wilderness adventure that takes place in the magnificent Tsitsikamma indigenous rainforest. The first of its kind in Africa, the canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 metres above the forest floor.
Most platforms are located in giant Outeniqua Yellowwood trees. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and professional guides provide interesting facts about the forest ecology during the 2½ to 3 hours it takes to descend.
The concept of guiding people through the upper canopy of a rainforest originated in Costa Rica, where adventurous biologists devised new methods to access the forest canopy in order to conduct research on the undiscovered canopy ecosystem. The idea soon developed into a breathtaking form of eco-tourism that allowed people to enter and experience a previously inaccessible natural environment.
Monkeylands and Birds of Eden
Monkeyland is the world’s first multi-species free-roaming primate sanctuary, renowned throughout the world for its rehabilitation work. Visitors are offered the opportunity to join a one-hour safari. Here, you can expect to see many species of monkeys, apes and lemurs living as they should – free and in a forested habitat.
Monkeyland is a unique primate sanctuary and the top eco-tourism attraction on the Garden Route, capturing the hearts of visitors thanks to its efforts to rehabilitate and free previously caged primates. The residents here are free to move about the forest and do so most harmoniously. The transfer of information about these fascinating creatures enhances your visit to the sanctuary during a safari. The safaris are conducted by multi-lingual game rangers and are fun, exciting and educational. Guests leave the sanctuary with a greater understanding of the primates of the world and the threats they are facing.
Birds of Eden is the Garden Route’s very own world-class free-flight bird sanctuary.
Birds of Eden is the world’s largest free-flight aviary and incorporates an indigenous forest with waterfalls and elevated walkways. Previously caged birds from every corner of the globe live here in free flight. This is not somewhere you want to rush through, so allow enough time to soak up the splendour.
The unique two-hectare dome (the world’s largest) spans over a gorge of indigenous forest. The sanctuary has its own mysterious ruin, which incorporates a walk-behind waterfall. Another feature is its amphitheatre, which can accommodate more than 200 visitors. Like Monkeyland, the popular primate sanctuary next door, Birds of Eden boasts its own canopy walk. While shorter than the 128-metre bridge in Monkeyland, it hangs above the clouds.
The decision to develop Birds of Eden stemmed from the need to create a safe environment in which to release a large collection of free-flight African birds and miniature monkeys. The sanctuary also enables bird owners to apply to release their pet birds into the sanctuary after they have undergone rehabilitation. More than 3,500 birds currently live at the sanctuary.
Wine Tasting in Oubaai
Garden Route Wine Tasting is a full day guided tour that includes transport, entrance fees, a light lunch and bottled water.

Herolds Bay has coastal walks and trails ideal for spotting dolphins and whales. The area is also a popular spot for birders and nature-lovers.
Knysna Heads
Knysna, pearl of the scenic Garden Route, is situated between George and Plettenberg Bay. Perennially green thanks to a Mediterranean Mmaritime climate with rain falling throughout the year, Knysna is mantled by indigenous forests extending into the Tsitsikamma National Park area. Nestled between the impressive Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean, it is the culinary capital of oysters with other delectable seafood which makes it a compulsory stopover on every travellers’ itinerary. At the heart of Knysna is a lagoon protected from the sea by the monolithic sandstone “Heads,” which is best explored on board a catamaran or from along the hiking paths in the Featherbed Nature Reserve. A hotspot for arts and crafts, as well as such adventure activities as tree canopy gliding, kloofing and abseiling, Knysna offers something for everyone.
Cango Caves – Outdshoorn

Golfing
Golf is one of the most popular sports in South Africa, and golfers from around the world are attracted here throughout the year to play on some of the best golf courses on the continent. Not only are there many excellent courses here, but the stunning scenery makes them even more spectacular. When planning a golf trip to South Africa, here are some things to keep in mind.
Choose Your Preferred Area
South Africa is a vast country and there are many golf courses to choose from. Clearly you won’t be able to visit them all, so start by choosing your preferred area of the country.
For example, you could head to the Western Cape and visit Cape Town, or travel to Limpopo Province. Some of the best courses, however, are found along the Garden Route, which is one of the most beautiful areas of the country. Research the different areas of the country and find an area that looks appealing.
Choose a Hotel with a Golf Course
One of the best options is to stay in a hotel that also has an excellent golf course, and that way you get the whole package in one. One option is the Oubaai Hotel, Golf & Spa, which is on the Garden Route. The course is surrounded by beautiful scenery with the Outeniqua Mountains nearby. It’s also just a few minutes from George Airport, making it very easy to reach.
Here you will find the first signature golf course by Ernie Els in the country. It’s over 6,000 metres long, and it looks out over the Indian Ocean, making it a popular option.
Oubaai Hotel Golf & Spa Golf
Home means a place that nourishes the body, mind and spirit. This is the cornerstone of Oubaai’s belief. This is the underlying value that has created and grown Oubaai Golf Resort and Spa into the outstanding residential estate that it is today.
Situated adjacent to Herolds Bay on the Garden Route, a mere 8 minutes from George Airport, this hidden gem is ideally located with 180 degree views of the Indian Ocean and the Outeniqua mountains.
Authentic is one of the first words that comes to mind when thinking about Oubaai, designed to blend in with the natural splendour of the Cape. The eco-friendly ethos has created a natural paradise – providing a haven to an array of wildlife.
State of the art security systems offer complete peace of mind, enabling Oubaai residents to wander the expanse of the 242 hectare estate without a worry.
The Ernie Els 18 hole Championship course is kept in mint condition and it is one of the most beautiful settings that can be seen anywhere in the golfing world. It was recently awarded 3rd best conditioned course in Southern Cape and 10th in South Africa. The layout of the course is a traditional links type layout where veld grasses line the manicured fairways. The course measures 6,516 metres from the pro tees, which is uniquely long for a coastal course.
Oubaai is home to the Ernie Els signature Golf Course as well as the Oubaai Hotel, Golf & Freesia Spa, Oubaai Lifestyle Centre and the Oubaai Marketplace. The resort has its own Oubaai Heritage Trail with over 8km of hiking trails and Whale Viewing Deck, a must for dolphin and whale watching.
Many of the Garden Route’s attractions and activities come courtesy of the beautiful scenery. The area’s lagoons, rivers and forests lend themselves to exploration by canoe, bike or by foot.
Of course, it’s perfectly acceptable when visiting the Garden Route, to get into total relaxation mode and limit your activities to a stroll through an interesting town, a gentle debate as to where to take lunch and a lazy afternoon spent gazing at the views. However, if you’re the type who needs to be kept busy, or if you have children who need to be entertained, the Garden Route pulls out all the stops on the action front.
There are adrenaline rushes, educational trips and simply fun things to do – like whizzing through the treetops, walking with an elephant, a visit to Monkeyland and Birds of Eden or flinging yourself off a 216m high bridge (attached to a bungee cord, that is). There is so much to see and do on a Garden Route family holiday.
Relax at the end of it all with a crisp South African wine, ocean-fresh Knysna oysters and an inspiring Garden Route view.

There is also a bird-watching hut where a variety of birds indigenous to the Garden Route can be seen. South Africa is one of the best destinations in the world for watching marine mammals, with spectacular annual visits from Southern Right and Humpback whales, and enormous pods of dolphins on view year-round. Every year, Southern Right Whales migrate from their icy feeding grounds off Antarctica to warmer climes, reaching South Africa in June.
The Garden Route, from Stilbaai through Mossel Bay and on to George, Wilderness, Knysna and Tsitsikamma, is generally a magnificent stretch of coastline hosting Southern Right Whales in their season, Humpback Whales between May and December, Bryde’s Whales all year round and, occasionally, Killer Whales.
Only golf carts have access to Oubaai Hotel Golf & Spa’s popular whale-viewing deck.
South Africa’s Garden Route offers unique birding opportunities, with a diverse range of habitats, and is home to approximately 300 species of birds, making it an ideal destination for bird-watching when making travel plans in South Africa. The resort offers a bird-watching hut where you become one with nature as you watch these birds in their natural habitat.

Oubaai Hotel Golf & Spa Area Activities
Ocean Safari and Nature Walk
An eco tour which is a full day guided tour including transport, entrance fees, light lunch and bottled water.
Plettenbergbay is the start of this Tour. A forest walk is done in the Garden of Eden. A see going vessel and an ocean safari is done viewing dolphins, seals, whales when in season. Once viewing is done a stop and break is done at an Italian seafood restaurant. The drive back to Oubaai is a sightseer’s point of interest along the Garden Route.
The tour departs at 8:00am and return 6:00pm. Rates are from R 900 per person and minimum of five people per group. A late cancellation fee and no show will be applicable at 50% of the rate per person.
Please confirm the Ocean Safari and Nature Walk tour 24 hours prior to departure.
Redberry Strawberry Farm
If you are looking for a fun and original day out, there is nothing that rivals the Redberry Farm experience along South Africa’s scenic Garden Route.
The tour departs at 8:00am with an expedition to Calitzdorp through the scenic Outeniqua Mountains and the Little Karoo. Four different wine estates are visited and, at each estate, you will be given a short explanation of the various wines on offer before tasting them. Lunch is served in Oudshoorn before returning to the hotel by 6:00pm.
Herolds Bay Beach
Just 15 km from George and a two-minute drive from Oubaai, Herolds Bay Beach is nestled in a magnificent and sheltered rocky cove where the golden sands meet the frothy, turquoise waters of the ocean.
Located 29 km from Oudtshoorn, at the head of the picturesque Cango Valley is the spectacular underground wonder of the Klein Karoo, the Cango Caves. Situated in a limestone ridge parallel to the well-known Swartberg Mountains are the finest dripstone caverns, with vast halls and towering formations.
Cango Caves are the only show caves in Africa that offer a choice of Standard (easy) or Adventure tours. All tours are lead by experienced, knowledgeable and accredited Cave Guides. All tours are offered in English, but Afrikaans, German, French and other language guides may be available (please check guide availability when making a reservation).
Paragliding

Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market
An exciting and significant landmark in the heart of South Africa’s Garden Route, the multiple award-winning Wild Oats Community Farmers’ Market is located on the outskirts of the tiny coastal town of Sedgefield, adjacent to the beautiful Swartvlei lake-lagoon. Now in its tenth year, this small, rustic but internationally famous farmers’ market continues to attract the enthusiasm of proud locals and discerning travellers who return consistently for more of its festive fare.
What this initiative has achieved is the blending of people from diverse backgrounds, uniting urban and rural where important educational experiences about local food sources, nutrition, environmental awareness and agricultural issues all blend into an unusual festive spirit of community.
This authentic producers’ market is brimming with the choicest locally-produced foods, including the take-home and breakfast variety. Headlining free-range meats, chicken, lamb, dairy and cheese, the market also specialiszes in fresh-from-the-field vegetables, freshly baked and bottled goods, as well as a wide variety of fresh-off-the-coals breakfasts. The market also proudly offers the many plants and flowers of the unique Southern Cape Floral Kingdom, propogated by local plant specialists.
Horse-back Riding
Enjoy horse-back rides on Buffalo Bay Beach and forest rides, or even a miniature horse riding for children.
Horse-back riding lessons: single private lessons or group lessons are available.
