About Jeffreys Bay
Another time of the year when the whole of Jeffreys Bay comes alive is when the Billabong Pro Surfing Competition is in action. This top-notch surfing event is attended by professionals from around the world and takes place over several days in July, at Supertubes, a legendary surfing spot at Dolphin Beach. Supertubes is one of the top ten surfing spots in the world, producing some of the best waves in Africa. Over 10 000 spectators are usually around to see the final outcome of this competition. The Jeffreys Bay Billabong competition takes place during the winter along with the J-Bay Winter Fest that incorporates thirteen different sporting events, such as the Mountain Bike Open and a three-stage trail run. This time in Jeffreys Bay is also made even more exhilarating by a number of associated events that include a skins fishing competition and the National Kite Festival.
The Dolphin Beach Entertainment Centre is one of J-Bay’s main attractions in summer. It has a large waterslide with heated water and an 18-hole putt-putt (mini-golf) course. This fun park has been operating since 1985 and is open annually from October to April. At Dolphin Beach, on calm days, snorkelling around the reef is a great experience. You can also walk for miles, all the way to the Gamtoos River and beyond. For safe swimming, lifeguards man the beaches during the high summer season.
The wide variety of beautiful shells on the J-Bay beaches makes them very special places indeed. To celebrate this fact the Shell Museum was opened in Jeffreys Bay, today housing over 600 shells from different locations around the world. It has one of the largest collections of shells in the country. In addition, Jeffreys Bay is the host of the very popular, annual Shell Festival. This festival once again brings J-Bay to life and attracts over 10,000 visitors every day. Stalls, music, dancing, competitions and shells galore ensure this to be a super fun event to attend
The best place to find out some really fascinating facts and the history of surfing is no-where else but in Jeffreys Bay at the Surf Museum. The museum is filled with genuine magazine articles, photographs and newspaper clippings that relate to the sport of surfing and how it all began. At this museum you can find out more about the evolution of the heavier, old board to today’s light surfboard and see who is on the list for the finest surfers in J-Bay.
In terms of shopping, Jeffreys Bay is famous for its Billabong Factory Shops, and a recently built shopping centre, Fountains Mall, has become a popular hangout. At Fountains Mall you will find everything from souvenirs to groceries, and it also has a cinema. For many years, Potter’s Place has been a popular local hotspot. People from all walks of life feel right at home here, in the restaurant, coffee shop, pottery studio or gift shop. The gift shop sells all sorts of one-of-a-kind items and you can even make your own pottery piece to take home at the studio. This is also the venue for several seasonal live music shows.
Nearby Jeffreys the Gamtoos River Mouth is a great location for enjoying water and sunshine. The river is gorgeous and perfect for canoeing and boating, and the long stretch of soft, sandy beach with gentle waves is the ideal spot for some swimming and sun tanning. Alternatively, you could pack a picnic and visit the Kabeljous Nature Reserve to observe the diverse vegetation, abundant birdlife and the small animals that reside in the area, such as bushbuck, bushpig and mongoose.
