Calitzdorp Country House Accommodation
Our accommodation includes five luxurious air-conditioned bedrooms with king-sized beds, each with its own private patio.
The rooms are furnished in South African Karoo style and graced with a fabulous collection of original South African paintings. Original Oregon wood floors add to the overall elegance of the house. En suite bathrooms include shower, twin washbasins on Italian granite slabs and outsize baths that invite intimate candle-lit meetings!
The luxurious feel extends to the elegant and spacious dining and sitting rooms, where ceiling fans produce gentle swirls of cooling air. In hotter conditions, air conditioning throughout the House easily copes with your need for comfort.
Dining and sitting rooms flow out to a flagstone-paved courtyard, ideal for fresh morning breakfasts or al fresco dining on hot still summer evenings, or just for lazing, drink in hand whilst enjoying the scenery.
The courtyard’s restful water fountain looks over the long view westwards across a blue sparkling swimming pool and gazebo, green vineyards and lush orchards, with a backdrop of the stark and dramatic Swartberg Mountains.
Throughout the house, the Karoo style sash windows and wood and glass paneled doors are sometimes covered in the afternoons to keep out the fierce African sun.
The cool shade of a verandah surrounds three sides of the house, inviting you to relax on 19th century Cape riempie banke (traditional rawhide-strung farm benches), and enjoy a feast of bird life in the trees surrounding our small dam.
Enjoy the spectacular South African sunsets behind the Swartberg Mountains and the splendid Southern night skies that you can only find in Africa.
Calitzdorp Country House Attractions
The little town of Calitzdorp is in the heart of the Klein Karoo’s world class attractions. It is only four hours from Cape Town and ideally situated on Route 62
Also known as the ‘Port Wine Capital’ of South Africa, Calitzdorp is the fruit bowl of the Klein Karoo and the ideal stopover for travelers to the Garden Route and Port Elizabeth. Naturally, this enjoyment starts with the five wine cellars, famous for their Port wines that regularly win top local and international accolades. The area is also renowned for its indigenous flora, especially the 500 species of succulents, 200 of which are found nowhere else on earth. And not least, the stunning sunsets and glorious Karoo night sky with its billions of stars, unsullied by the city’s smog, will live long in your memory.
There are many “must sees” to be visited within easy driving distance of your luxury accommodation in Calitzdorp. For energetic guests mountain bikes are available for hire in the village, as well a number of walking trails of varying distances and degrees of difficulty. For the adventurous there are a number of 4×4 routes in the area.
About the Klein Karoo
The Klein Karoo is an important sub-region of the World Heritage site known as the Cape Floral Kingdom. Klein Karoo means ‘little desert’, an arid region that is interrupted every forty or fifty kilometers by fertile valleys fed by mountain streams that enable orchards and vineyards to flourish. Indeed, Route 62, the main highway traversing this fascinating land, is famed as the longest wine route in the world.
The Klein Karoo has a spectacular landscape fashioned hundreds of millions ago of years ago by water and geological upheaval. Its flora ranges from lush greenery in the river valleys to ground-hugging, hardy Karoo plants in the open veldt, including the largest number of succulents on earth.
The region’s astonishing geological shapes and formations are home to the famed Cango Caves, a series of spectacular caverns fashioned over millennia by the seepage of water through porous limestone rock. At night, the Klein Karoo skies provide a stunning display of light virtually unknown to dwellers in the Big Smoke, including the Southern Cross, Orion and the awesome Milky Way in its infinite magnificence. Some say the Klein Karoo credibly challenges Montana as ‘big sky’ country.
